How to Clean Your Dishwasher Filter Properly
If your dishwasher isn’t cleaning dishes like it used to, the problem might be hiding in the filter. At Sweet Home Appliance, we remind customers that regular filter maintenance is key to a sparkling clean load — and it only takes a few minutes. Here's how to clean your dishwasher filter the right way.
Why Cleaning the Filter Matters
The filter traps food particles and debris to prevent them from recirculating during the wash cycle. Over time, buildup can clog the filter, reducing cleaning performance and even causing odors or standing water in the tub.
Step-by-Step Guide to Cleaning Your Dishwasher Filter
1. Locate the Filter
The filter is usually located at the bottom of the dishwasher, beneath the lower spray arm. You may need to remove the bottom rack to access it. Most models have a round twist-off cover or mesh screen that can be removed by hand.
2. Remove the Filter
Twist and lift the cylindrical filter out gently. If there's a secondary mesh filter or cover, remove that as well. Be sure to consult your user manual for specific instructions related to your model.
3. Rinse Under Warm Water
Run the filter under warm water to remove loose debris. For greasy or caked-on particles, soak the filter in a mixture of warm water and a small amount of dish soap for 10–15 minutes.
4. Scrub Gently with a Soft Brush
Use a soft toothbrush or sponge to clean in and around the mesh screen. Avoid using anything abrasive that could damage the filter material.
5. Wipe Down the Filter Housing
Before reinserting the filter, use a cloth or sponge to wipe out the inside of the filter housing. This helps remove any lingering debris or buildup.
6. Reinstall the Filter
Place the filter back in its original position and twist or snap it into place securely. Make sure it's locked to prevent damage during future wash cycles.
How Often Should You Clean It?
We recommend cleaning the filter:
- Every month if you use your dishwasher daily
- Every 2–3 months for light or occasional use
- Immediately if you notice odors, poor performance, or standing water
